VSTi Viola da Terra

VSTi (Virtual Studio Technology).

Created by the German company Steinberg in 1996, it was originally developed to emulate studio equipment and to transform hardware into software. Later, its reach spanned to musical instruments. In so doing, the sound of instruments could now be executed by computers through technology.

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface).

Viola da Terra - Terceira

The viola da terra from Terceira Island, part of the rich family of traditional Portuguese string instruments, is a musical gem that stands out for its unique characteristics. With a round soundhole in the style of a classical guitar and 15 strings (unlike the 12-string violas from other Azorean islands), this instrument offers a distinctive sound deeply rooted in the Azorean musical tradition.

The playing technique for the Terceira viola da terra is similar to that of the Portuguese guitar, utilizing the thumb and index finger, which enables a vibrant and captivating expressiveness, ideal for the melodies and harmonies characteristic of Azorean tradition.

With this VSTi, musicians and producers worldwide can explore and incorporate the authentic sound of the Terceira viola da terra into their compositions.

VST Viola da Terra - Terceira

The instrument recorded for this VSTi was a special creation by luthier Óscar Cardoso, marking his debut in crafting this type of viola. With creative freedom in designing the soundbox, Óscar Cardoso produced an instrument that combines tradition and innovation, reflecting the soul of Terceira Island.

This project was sponsored by Direcção Regional dos Assuntos Culturais (Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs).
